Alyda Richardson Day
AAWA is very proud to announce that December 4 was declared as “Alyda Richardson Day!”
Before she became the Vice President of AAWA, Alyda Richardson has been doing rescue, foster, transport and volunteering for eight years.
At the beginning of her journey, Alyda personally fostered and rescued many animals from the Altus area and the Altus Animal Shelter starting in 2010. Most of the animals that she has fostered had medical problems or were from hoarding situations. Not only was she instrumental in putting together adoption events and fundraisers, but she took an active role in finding suitable fosters for many animals from Altus Animal Shelter.
Eventually, Alyda and Brenda began collaborating with Wings of Rescue and Fetch Fido A Flight to get dogs rescued to the Pacific Northwest region. Since then both ladies have helped transport hundreds of animals to rescues.
Alyda is a testament to the saying, “in a gentle way, you can shake the world”. Her dedication to Altus animals is unmatched and because of her heart and spirit, hundreds of Altus animals are enjoying life in loving homes.
As a founding member of the Altus Area Spay Neuter Incentive Program (AASNIP), Alyda and her team of volunteers enabled thousands of dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered. AASNIP started out with volunteers taking five animals at a time to Lawton’s ABC Clinic. One volunteer would take them in the morning and one would pick up them up in the evening.
They eventually moved on from transporting on their own to working with Puppy Express out of Oklahoma City as the transporter to OK Humane Place Spay Neuter Clinic in OKC.
In 2015, Alyda was approached by Brenda Mahan, about starting a Non-Profit Organization-- Altus Animal Welfare Association (AAWA). That same year they started advocating for the Altus Animal Shelter by volunteering, cleaning, transporting animals to Vernon, TX, and OKC.
